The Short List Is Very Short
Ask ChatGPT for a good plumber in your town and you will get a short list. Maybe three names. Maybe five. If your business isn't on that list, that customer may never know you exist.
Making that list is harder than most owners think. SOCi, a marketing software company based in California that helps chains and franchises manage their local presence, studied more than 350,000 locations of multi-location brands for its 2026 Local Visibility Index. ChatGPT recommended just 1.2% of them. Google’s local map results showed an average of 35.9% of the same locations.
That makes AI roughly 30 times pickier than Google. A business can rank well on Google and still be invisible when someone asks AI.
Why AI Search Matters for Local Businesses
People are changing how they look for local help. BrightLocal is a local SEO software company based in England whose tools many small businesses and agencies use. Its 2026 consumer survey found AI is now the fourth most common place people start a local search. Only Google search, Google Maps and social media rank higher.
These tools don't show ten blue links. They give one answer, and voice assistants often read it out loud. Being in that answer is the new top spot.
What AI Looks for Before Naming a Business
AI tools don't guess. They pull from sources they trust and look for signs that a business is real, open and well liked.
Matching listings. According to SOCi, AI engines combine information from Google Maps, Yelp, Facebook and business websites. When your name, address, phone or hours don't match, AI may pass you over.
Strong reviews. Locations ChatGPT recommended averaged 4.3 stars in the SOCi study.
Detailed information. People ask AI specific questions, like whether a restaurant has allergy-friendly options. Listings that answer those details give AI something to work with.
A website AI can read. Some websites load their text with code after the page opens. Many crawlers never see that text at all.
Five Steps to Get on AI's List
Claim your listings. Set up Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp and Facebook. Apple Business Connect is free and controls how you appear in Apple Maps and Siri.
Make your details match everywhere. Use the exact same business name, address, phone number and hours on every site.
Ask happy customers for reviews. Reply to every review, good or bad.
Fill in the details. Add services, photos, menus, accessibility features and payment options.
Test it yourself. Ask ChatGPT, Siri and Google's AI for your type of business in your town. Write down who shows up.
Get Mentioned Where Your Neighbors Read
AI tools build their answers from what the web says about a business. Your own listings and website are a big part of that. Mentions on trusted local websites can add to the picture.
SpiderCat Marketing runs a network of hyperlocal news sites across Northeast Ohio, including NordoniaHills.News, NEOhio.news, The Aurora Pulse, The Stow-Munroe Falls Pulse and Green Ohio News. A business feature on one of our sites puts your name, location and services on a local news website, where search engines and AI tools can find it. It also puts you in front of local readers who are already looking for businesses near them.
No one can promise a spot in ChatGPT’s answer. A feature on a local news site is one more way to help AI and your neighbors find you. Ask us about business features on the news network when you request your free check.
I kept it to “potentially helps,” as you said. The SOCi study names Google Maps, Yelp, Facebook and business websites as AI’s main sources, not news sites, so the honest pitch is that a feature adds one more trusted mention on top of strong listings. That also keeps it credible coming from a publisher.
When you run paid business features, label them as sponsored on the news sites. That protects reader trust and keeps you in line with FTC disclosure rules for paid content.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my business? Ask it. Type the question a customer would ask, such as "best hair salon in Macedonia, Ohio," and see if your business appears. Try it in Google's AI and Siri too, since each tool uses different sources.
Why doesn't ChatGPT show my business? Common reasons include listings that don't match across sites, few or weak reviews, missing details and a website crawlers can't read. Fixing your listings is usually the best first step.
What is Apple Business Connect? It's a free tool from Apple that lets you claim your business and control how it appears in Apple Maps, Siri and other Apple apps. It works much like Google Business Profile.
Do reviews affect AI recommendations? Yes. SOCi's 2026 study found the locations ChatGPT recommended averaged 4.3 stars. Ratings and reviews were among the strongest signals behind AI recommendations.
Is AI search replacing Google? Not yet. Google search and Google Maps are still where most local searches start. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found AI is now the fourth most common starting point, so it's worth showing up in both.
